On the banks of the Gooimeer, between a new housing development and the lake’s waters, we designed a unique quay: a typical Dutch vista with a twist. This was achieved by circumventing the usual Dutch obsession with organisation and division of streets into specific functional strips. Instead, a composition of parking-wokkels (wiggly bits), street Flippos and solid benches banks were used to create a self-regulating traffic solution. Exceptional interventions were placed at various points along the quay such as: the bastion, the beach bowl, the windy square and the pier with its own boat ramp. The result was a multi-facetted quay used for mini-markets, neighbourhood festivals and the annual Barbecue. location: Huizen, The Netherlands design period: 1995-2002 implementation: 1996-2004 area: 2,2 hectare designed by: Juurlink [+] Geluk (Huub Juurlink, Cor Geluk, Jeroen van Kesteren, Godfried de Graaff) in cooperation with: Neutelings Riedijk Architects en Grontmij commissioned by: City of Huizen photography: Jeroen Musch, Chidi Onwuka
