A residential neighbourhood containing 1500 homes has been placed, with surgical precision, into the rugged camouflage woods of an old military tank-training complex. These dense woodlands provide a solid contrast to the array of individually designed resident’s homes. In order to keep as much of the original woods intact, the residential areas were created by carving out informal, internal courtyards in the ’urban chambers’ and informal alleyways at the back of the houses in the ’landscaped chambers’. The urban chambers are oriented toward the internal courtyards while the front doors of housing within the landscaped chambers look out on the old camouflage woods and internally situated orchards. location: Eindhoven, The Netherlands design period: 2004-2014 (supervision) implementation: 2005- area: ca. 45 ha program: 1.380 houses designed by: Juurlink[+]Geluk (Huub Juurlink, Cor Geluk, Marcel van der Meys, Frank Maas, Niels Weygers, Lieke Sauren) in cooperation with: Architectuurstudio Herman Hertzberger commissioned by: City of Eindhoven photography: Chidi Onwuka, Juurlink [+] Geluk
