The Erasmus Medical Centre is undergoing a phased metamorphosis: going under the surgeon’s knife, so to say. As old sections of the complex are dismantled a new medical centre together with faculty buildings slowly rises in their place. The new complex is based around a series internally located atria and interconnecting public spaces. The scale of these spaces allows for a clear oversight of the complex thus giving the medical centre a functional ’back bone’. The atria are designed as internal green worlds, which not only increase the building’s utility and functionality but also provide relaxing and reflective ’lounge space’ for patients, visitors and staff. klijk here for subproject Masterplan klijk here for subproject Roofgardens klijk here for subproject Atria klijk here for subproject Wytemaweg location: Rotterdam, The Netherlands design period: 2005 - 2016 implementation: 2011- area: 4,4 ha square + streets, 6000m2 atria, 5000 m2 roof gardens designed by: Juurlink [+] Geluk (Cor Geluk, Simone de Bergh, Franziska Meisel, Mattijs Gevers) in cooperation with: EGM Architects, DG Groep engineering commissioned by: Erasmus MC, City of Rotterdam
