Three cities in Twente, Enschede and Almelo and Hengelo, compete for visitors and residents. Hengelo understood that an appealing city centre is an essential precondition when trying to stimulate new activities and attract new residents and businesses. Inspiration for the design came from the architecture of Hengelo’s post-war reconstruction: modern materials such as large terrazzo plates, concrete and natural stone were used to give the city centre a new atmosphere. The result was a cool, chic, interconnected and flexible central public space: an ’open air mall’ able to accommodate temporary programs such a market, the Rond van Hengelo cycle race, a fairground and the Postcode Lottery Show. location: Hengelo, The Netherlands design period: 1997-2002 implementation: 1998-2004 area: 4,15 ha designed by: Juurlink [+] Geluk (Huub Juurlink, Cor Geluk, Jeroen van Kesteren, Godfried de Graaf, Jan Willem van Breugel) in cooperation with: Civil Engineering Department Hengelo commissioned by: City of Hengelo photography: Jeroen Musch, Chidi Onwuka
