In a time of ever more recreational alternatives, the Efteling needed a way of maintaining and possibly increasing the number of visitors. The plan was simple: create the possibility to extend what is usually a day trip into a weekend stay, complete with overnight accommodation. A master plan was drawn up for the design and construction of recreational holiday cottages. These were located in an existing Brabant landscape: with pine forests, deciduous trees, gently undulating dunes and meadows. Typical Efteling characteristics such as a meandering streams and a lake with the Sandman’s castle, a fairy tale gatehouse, a small village and a country mansion in the middle of a field. The cottages are all unique, not only in style but also in the way they relate to, and take advantage of the new landscape. location: Kaatsheuvel, The Netherlands design period: 2006 - 2008 implementation: 2009 - 2010 area: 16 ha program: 1500 beds in 140 houses + 2 appartment blocks + additional facilities designed by: Juurlink + Geluk (Cor Geluk, Huub Juurlink, Elena Chevchenko, Joost de Wit) in cooperation with: Van Aken Architects, DG Groep engineering commissioned by: Efteling photography: Chidi Onwuka, Juurlink[+]Geluk
